Tom Holland recalls how his relationship with Zendaya influenced one Spider-Man 4 scene

Rather than talking about action sequences or Marvel secrets, Tom Holland recently highlighted a behind-the-scenes moment that helped improve the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Speaking on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast, Holland explained that a scene between him and Zendaya simply was not landing the way it should.

The actor said they had already completed his camera coverage and moved on to filming Zendaya’s side of the scene. While shooting, he began feeling that something was off. Because of the trust they share, Holland felt comfortable asking a question he said he would never ask another actress.

“I would never ever dream of saying this to an actress that I wasn’t with,” Holland said before asking Zendaya, “Do you think that this scene is working?” According to him, she immediately agreed that it was not.

That conversation sparked a bigger discussion. Holland took the concern to director Destin Daniel Cretton. He told the filmmaker that neither he nor Zendaya felt the emotional beats were coming across properly.

Instead of pushing forward, Cretton listened. Holland praised the director for remaining calm and open to feedback. The production paused work on the scene, and the creative team went back to rewrite it.

“Everyone can go home, and we’re gonna sit down and rewrite this scene,” Cretton reportedly told the crew. The following day, they filmed a revised version. Holland said the change paid off and added, “I’m so glad that we did because it sings in the movie.”
