Masters of the Universe Star Knighted Ahead of Movie’s Release

Masters of the Universe actor Idris Elba was recently honored with a knighthood. He received it for his charitable work and support for young people. Through his foundation, the actor helps educate and empower the youth in multiple countries. He is also a prominent activist and started an anti-knife campaign in the United Kingdom.

Idris Elba is awarded a knighthood

On Tuesday, June 2, King Charles III bestowed knighthood on Idris Elba for his contributions to society through the Elba Hope Foundation. The ceremony took place at Windsor Castle in Berkshire, England. The actor will now be officially known as Sir Idris Elba.

While the investiture ceremony took place this week, the honor was first announced in December 2025. The Gazette, the official newspaper of the Crown, published a complete list of the recipients. It also included important figures from other fields.

Following the announcement, the Luther star said, “I receive this honor on behalf of the many young people whose talent, ambition and resilience has driven the work of the Elba Hope Foundation.”

The actor continued, “I hope we can do more to draw attention to the importance of sustained, practical support for young people and to the responsibility we all share to help them find an alternative to violence” (via Sky News).

The 53-year-old actor founded the Elba Hope Foundation with his wife, Sabrina Dhowre Elba, in 2022. It aims to empower youth and create positive change across Africa, the UK, and the US. Its mission is to help young people build better futures through education, job training, and economic opportunities. 

In addition, The Wire actor also launched Don’t Stop Your Future, an anti-knife crime campaign that works with local communities to prevent knife-related violence. Along with Sir Idris Elba, The Crown also honored Sir Paul Elliott, comedian Dame Meera Syal, Dame Betty Brown, and the 1984 Winter Olympic gold medalists Dame Jayne Torvill and Sir Christopher Dean, for their various contributions to society.
