James Gunn confirms Man of Tomorrow’s place in DCU timeline
James Gunn has confirmed that Man of Tomorrow takes place in “basically real time” after 2025 Superman. The director revealed this on Threads when a fan asked about the film’s timeline placement. This means the sequel will feature a time jump of around two years from the original film.
Man of Tomorrow serves as both a direct sequel to Superman and a narrative follow-up to Peacemaker Season 2. It stands as the fourth film in the DC Universe and the seventh installment of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. The film also follows the events of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which will be released soon.
Gunn previously shared key details about the film’s story direction. He described it as “a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat.” He also confirmed the movie is “as much a Lex Luthor movie as it is a Superman movie.”
Lars Eidinger joins the cast as Vril Dox/Brainiac, who serves as the film’s main villain. Milly Alcock will reprise her role as Supergirl, as Variety confirmed through an interview with Alcock and producer Peter Safran. Adria Arjona also joins the project as Maxima after a competitive screen-testing process against several other actresses.
Filming began on April 17, 2026, in Atlanta under the working title “Exodus.” Several cast members return from Superman, including David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult, and Rachel Brosnahan. Aaron Pierre, Nathan Fillion, and Edi Gathegi reprise their roles as John Stewart, Guy Gardner, and Mister Terrific. Recent additions include Matthew Lillard and Sinqua Walls in currently undisclosed roles.
DC Studios has set the release date for July 9, 2027.
