How Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey ‘Saved’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day MCU Movie

Spider-Man: Brand New Day was saved by Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey. Tom Holland, who is also set to feature in both movies, has revealed some fascinating details. He explained how the acclaimed director’s upcoming epic adventure helped the MCU’s fourth Spider-Man project to become a better movie.

What did Tom Holland say about The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day?

Speaking with GQ, Holland explained how Spider-Man: Brand New Day benefited from the fact that its production overlapped with Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. The actor revealed that when he first got the offer for Nolan’s film, the production dates were almost identical.

Although Holland was already committed to Sony and Marvel’s Brand New Day, he pushed for the superhero movie’s production to begin slightly later. Thankfully, Sony accepted his request to do the same and allowed him to shoot for The Odyssey. This way, the dates for Brand New Day’s filming were moved ahead. Holland believes it was the best thing to happen for the MCU movie because the franchise got the extra time to figure out key details and also hire a very good director in Destin Daniel Cretton.

“The Odyssey almost saved Spider-Man because we wouldn’t have had Destin,” said Holland while explaining his point. “He wouldn’t have been ready to make the movie when we were ready to go. We wouldn’t have had the six-month period to develop the script with Destin to get it to a place where it is now. And I truly believe that we’ve made the best version of any Spider-Man movie going. So while it was a tough pill to swallow for Sony, I think in hindsight, they’re very grateful that it happened.”

Besides Holland, Brand New Day will also feature Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, Mark Ruffalo, and more.

Speaking of The Odyssey, it also stars Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Zendaya, among others.

While The Odyssey is set to arrive on July 17, 2026, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will hit theaters on July 31, 2026.
