Martin Scorsese Partners With AI Company for New Movie, Read Director’s Statement
Martin Scorsese is embracing AI for filmmaking. The celebrated director is partnering with an Artificial Intelligence start-up called Black Forest Labs for a new film.
What did Martin Scorsese say about partnering with an AI company?
Scorsese and Black Forest Labs made the announcement in a video on the company’s website. The director also discussed the potentially controversial move in an interview with The New York Times. Scorsese also signed on with the company last year as a partner and adviser.
Black Forest Labs is a research-driven generative AI company known for its FLUX image generation model. The announcement video shows the filmmaker working through a storyboarding session, describing a scene that is generated using the FLUX.2 model. The announcement centers on using AI tools during pre-production for tasks such as creating concept art and storyboards.
“I’m interested in the intersection of technology and storytelling, and seeing how that can push the bounds of creativity to create deeper and richer experiences for audiences,” Scorsese told NYT. “Remember, cinema is a young medium, only around 125 years old, so we have to be open to how it can evolve.”
“I am super excited about the fact that someone like Martin Scorsese — one of the greatest, most impressive filmmakers to exist — is using our technology and curious about exploring it,” said Robin Rombach, Chief Executive of Black Forest Labs. “It’s such a great proof point that this works.”

“Now, with this tool, I can share what I’m visualizing more clearly and efficiently to my creative team—the production designer, art designer, and cinematographer,” Scorsese said regarding the image generation tool.
Scorsese proposed that embracing AI image generation will help cut down on pre-production time. “During the pre-production process, time costs money, and this allowed us to move faster without sacrificing quality or craft,” he added.
It remains unclear which new film Scorsese will deploy the AI technology for. At the time of writing, the filmmaker has a slew of projects in the works, including What Happens at Night, a mob movie with Dwayne Johnson, The Life of Jesus, and more.
