Mark Wahlberg Is Unrecognizable as a Mafia Hitman in By Any Means Poster

Mark Wahlberg is barely recognizable in the first look at period flick By Any Means. The upcoming film sees the star playing a mafia hitman in the 1960s. To say he looks nothing like himself would be an understatement.

Directed by Elegance Bratton, By Any Means also stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Nicole Beharie, Josh Lucas, LisaGay Hamilton, LaChanze, Ethan Embry, with David Strathairn and Giancarlo Esposito. Abdul-Mateen II plays an FBI agent forced to work alongside Wahlberg’s character as he investigates a string of murders.

What do we see in the Mark Wahlberg By Any Means poster?

The poster for By Any Means shows a completely transformed Mark Wahlberg, wearing chin and nose prosthetics and a wig with longer hair and thick sideburns. The look from every bit feels like a man of the 1960s, with period-accurate baggy attire and aviator sunglasses completing the look. The transformation is in line with the kind of overhauls Wahlberg is known for in films like Father Stu and Flight Risk.

Mark Wahlberg is playing Gregory Scarpa in the film, a real-life hitman and caporegime for the Colombo crime family of New York City. Despite being a high-ranking member of the mafia, Scarpa was also an FBI informant for over three decades. He worked with them on multiple cases, including the 1964 Mississippi Civil Rights murder, which is actually what By Any Means is based on.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is also seen alongside Wahlberg’s Scarpa in the poster, sporting a stern look in formal FBI attire in the promotional stills as well.

The synopsis for the film reads, “Based on a true story, a young Black FBI agent (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) is sent into 1960s Mississippi to investigate a wave of brutal killings targeting civil rights leaders. Forced to work alongside notorious mafia hitman Greg Scarpa (Mark Wahlberg), he finds himself pulled into a deadly hunt where justice and vengeance begin to blur. When the system is broken, two men divided by everything agree on one thing: the law has limits. They don’t.”

By Any Means will hit the big screens on September 4, 2026.
