Disney’s Atlantis To Get New Sequel 25 Years After The Lost Empire
Disney’s cult-favorite Atlantis franchise is finally getting a brand-new sequel. The return comes through an official comic that continues Milo and Kida’s story beyond the movie.
For years, fans wondered if Disney would ever revisit the underwater world of Atlantis. Now, that long wait is ending with a fresh adventure that expands the franchise and brings back some of its most beloved characters.
New Atlantis: The Lost Empire sequel comic book has been announced
Disney is officially returning to Atlantis with a sequel comic titled Atlantis: The Lost Empire — The Curse of Kurok. Published by Papercutz, the first volume is set to release on October 13, 2026. It is arriving as part of the movie’s 25th anniversary celebration (via Screenrant).
According to the early story details, the sequel takes place after the events of the 2001 animated film. Milo Thatch and Princess Kida will once again fight to protect Atlantis, this time from a dangerous new threat. While facing that danger, they also uncover deeper secrets tied to Atlantis’ history, discoveries that could shape its future.
The announcement is especially notable because Disney has largely left the franchise untouched for years. Aside from the direct-to-video follow-up Atlantis: Milo’s Return and a canceled television spinoff idea, the studio rarely revisited the property despite its growing fan base. Many fans have long considered Atlantis: The Lost Empire one of Disney’s most underrated animated films.
Released in 2001, Atlantis: The Lost Empire stood out from traditional Disney movies with its steampunk-inspired visuals, darker tone, and adventure-heavy story. Directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, the film followed linguist Milo Thatch as he searched for the legendary lost city. Even though it struggled at the box office, the movie gradually earned cult-classic status over the years.
The movie currently holds a 6.9/10 rating on IMDb. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 48% critics score and a 55% audience score. Despite mixed reviews at release, many have continued to praise its world-building, unique art style, and more mature storytelling compared to both the era it released in and the current era.
