Backrooms 2 Release Date Status Revealed After Massive Box Office Opening

A24’s biggest hit just got a major sequel update that changes everything. Here’s where Backrooms 2 stands right now after the film’s record-breaking opening weekend.

New report denotes current status of Backrooms 2

Following Backrooms’ record-shattering $118 million worldwide opening, director Kane Parsons actively seeks a screenwriting collaborator for the sequel, Deadline reports. The 20-year-old filmmaker’s contract for additional Backrooms projects resides with A24. No star attachments or green lights exist at this stage.

Given the early development status, audiences likely face a two-to-three-year wait before a second film arrives. Parsons must first secure a collaborator and complete the script. Production and post-production timelines will then extend the process further.

Parsons previously expressed interest in expanding the franchise beyond a single sequel. He told Variety, “Without a doubt, Backrooms has always been planned to be more of a series that goes outside the confines of this film. If anything, I would say this is a bit of a foot in the door that would lead to more of a progression towards the true root of the narrative, which has been set up online for years.”

The director also revealed his preference for television as a storytelling medium. He told Polygon, “A series would be my dream scenario, personally. I think that’s the most practical way to narratively get what you want.” Parsons described his vision as an interpersonal drama built on a supernatural techno-thriller foundation.

Multiple production companies share credit for the first film’s success. 21 Laps, Atomic Monster/Blumhouse, Odd Fellows, and co-financier Chernin Entertainment all contributed to the under-$10 million production.

The film drew an audience that skewed 88% under 35. Backrooms currently earns north of $6 million daily and projects a $36 million second weekend. Parsons confirmed he has specific projects in development but called them part of a “secret mystery world” for now.

Backrooms is currently playing in theaters.
