James Gunn Reveals Unbelievable Details for Lex Luthor’s New Suit & Helmet

James Gunn just revealed Lex Luthor’s new warsuit, and it’s not what anyone expected. The director shared key details about Nicholas Hoult’s armor upgrade for Man of Tomorrow.

Lex Luthor’s suit in Man of Tomorrow is 100% practical

James Gunn shared the first look at Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor warsuit on Instagram while filming Man of Tomorrow in Atlanta.

Gunn confirmed on Threads that the warsuit will be “100% practical” in the upcoming DCU sequel. He also praised Hoult’s mobility in the armor, noting that the actor “can move incredibly well” while wearing it.

Additionally, Gunn revealed a notable departure from the comic book design for the warsuit. He stated that Luthor has “added unbreakable Lexiglas” to protect his head, which typically remains exposed in the comics. The green and purple armor first appeared in concept art released alongside the film’s announcement in September 2025.

However, the live-action version features some revisions from those original concept designs. The warsuit notably carries an ARGUS logo across the chest rather than a LuthorCorp one. This detail suggests that Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. may have helped Luthor acquire or build the armor.

In Man of Tomorrow, Luthor will wear the high-tech armor while teaming up with David Corenswet’s Superman against Lars Eidinger’s Brainiac. The warsuit gives Luthor enhanced combat capabilities, placing him on closer footing with superpowered beings. Previously, Luthor relied on his clone Ultraman for physical confrontations in Superman.

Luthor will also sport a different costume in the film, as he starts the story in prison. Hoult last appeared as Luthor in Peacemaker Season 2, where Rick Flag Sr. offered him a chance at redemption. Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart, Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane, and other DCU stars also join the cast.

Man of Tomorrow hits theaters on July 9, 2027, as part of the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
