Backrooms 2 Is Facing an Unexpected Roadblock Despite Box Office Success

Backrooms 2 feels all but certain after the film’s initial box office success. However, Kane Parsons‘ horror series faces an unexpected roadblock that might slow plans down for a sequel.

Backrooms is off to an unprecedented start at the box office. This past weekend, the horror movie opened with $81.4 million in North America, shattering its initial projections of $40 million to $50 million.

With its historic opening, Backrooms has set several records, including A24’s highest opening weekend ever. Parsons is now the youngest director (20) to top the domestic box office during an opening weekend.

Backrooms 2 is a matter of when and not if. Unfortunately for movie fans, the sequel might take a backseat to other plans.

Why Backrooms 2 might not happen immediately despite its box office success

Parsons has spoken openly about Backrooms and how it’s only the start of a potential franchise he wants to create. However, Parsons believes television is a better medium to explore more stories.

“Without a doubt, Backrooms has always been planned to be more of a series that goes outside the confines of this film,” Parsons said. “If anything, I would say this is a bit of a foot in the door that would lead to more of a progression towards the true root of the narrative, which has been set up online for years.”

Parsons further clarified his preference to make a television series in an interview with Polygon.

“A series would be my dream scenario, personally,” he says. “I think that’s the most practical way to narratively get what you want. But obviously, a series is a whole thing. So it won’t be immediate, it won’t be ‘snap your fingers and it’s here.’ And in general, the series, in my mind, is not determined by its genre label. The way I think of it is definitely a lot more of an interpersonal sort of drama built on top of a supernatural techno-thriller. That’s more the space I feel comfortable in.”

Contractually, Parsons is not done with Backrooms. He plans to make more projects in the universe inspired by his YouTube series.

“For people who are into it, I’ve got a contract, and I got a hold at my end, and that means I am definitely not done with Backrooms,” Parsons added. “I’ve got very specific things that I’m working on, things are in the works right now that I am eager to be able to talk about, but, currently, it’s still in a secret mystery world.”

Without knowing the specifics of Parsons’ contract, it’s unclear whether he must make another movie before jumping to television. Judging by his comments, Parsons would rather explore a Backrooms television show before making a sequel. Again, it comes down to his contract with A24 and the producers.
