Obsession Digital Release Delayed for a Great Reason
The digital release of Curry Barker‘s hit suspense drama Obsession has been delayed. However, this is good news for the film, which has broken multiple box office records.
What is the update on Obsession’s digital release?
Before anyone knew how big a hit Obsession was going to be, it was supposed to come out digitally on June 2. Universal and Focus Features have now decided to delay the digital release of the movie (via Forbes). The announcement comes just three weeks following the film’s release, which has been one of 2026’s surprise hits. A new digital release date has not yet been officially announced.
The film is now expected to remain in theaters exclusively for the remainder of the standard 45-day window. As for when fans will be able to get their hands on the movie, Blu-ray.com lists the film coming to physical media on July 14, 2026. The film is expected to stream on Peacock, where all Focus Features titles typically arrive after their theatrical run.
Obsession delaying its digital release is good news for its health at the box office. It exceeded industry expectations, with its box-office grosses increasing week over week. The film, especially considering its budget, has given stiff competition to Disney’s The Mandalorian and Grogu. Obsession’s box office gross rose 10% over its previous weekend, which itself grew by 39% over the opening weekend. With the film making more money in theaters, it’s no surprise that its distributors would want to retain the momentum before it makes its way to digital platforms.
At the time of writing, Obsession has grossed over $148 million at the global box office. Both it and A24’s Backrooms have shocked the world with their box office turnouts. Obsession has become one of the most profitable films of all time, having already earned more than 10 times its reported budget. The film currently sits at an impressive 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Barker has already signed with A24 to direct a reboot of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The director will also expand the world of Obsession with his next film.
Obsession stars Michael Johnston, Inde Navarrette, Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter. The film is produced by James Harris, Haley Nicole Johnson, Christian Mercuri, and Roman Viaris. It is executive produced by Jason Blum, Leonora Darby, David Haring, Mark Lane, and Ruzanna Kegeyan, with Cooper Tomlinson serving as associate producer.
Obsession is currently playing in theaters.
