Travis Knight explains how he brought Masters of the Universe out of development limbo
Director Travis Knight recently spoke with DiscussingFilm about bringing Masters of the Universe out of its long development journey.
Knight acknowledged the property’s troubled production history while explaining his personal connection to the material. He stated, “It’s one of those properties that’s been famously snakebitten for decades, and for me, getting it right was important that everyone involved really understood what the material was and actually had genuine affection for what it is, which I do.”
The film spent over 15 years in development across multiple studios before reaching the screen. Sony Pictures Entertainment first acquired the rights in September 2009, and the project cycled through numerous directors and writers. Netflix briefly held the rights before cancelling the project in July 2023 after spending $30 million on development.
Amazon MGM Studios then stepped in, with Knight officially confirmed as director in May 2024. Knight replaced the Nee Brothers, who had been attached to direct since April 2018. Nicholas Galitzine stars as Prince Adam alongside Camila Mendes, Jared Leto, Alison Brie, and Idris Elba.
Knight emphasized that sincerity drove his approach to the material despite its inherently over-the-top nature. He explained, “We do live in an age of detachment, of irony, sort of arm’s length judgement, and that’s not how I approach any of my work.” He added that he invested two and a half years of his life into making the film.
The director also noted the film balances tonal range while staying grounded in genuine passion. Knight said, “Even though there’s silliness to it, there’s cheekiness to it, there’s some irreverence to it, at the heart, we passionately believe in this world, and we took it very, very seriously, even though the movie itself is very funny.” Principal photography took place in London from January to June 2025.
The film premieres in the United States on June 5, 2026, through Amazon MGM Studios.
