Scary Movie Rotten Tomatoes Predictions Are Tragically Low (But Does It Matter?)
The upcoming comedic parody Scary Movie, otherwise known as Scary Movie 6, has received low predictions for its Rotten Tomatoes rating. But the horror parodies, let alone parody films as a genre, don’t typically get high scores from critics in the first place, so this nostalgic reboot of the series might be immune to whatever reviews say. Releasing on June 5, Scary Movie is directed by Michael Tiddes and serves a reunion for the original cast with the Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris, Regina Hall, and more. The Paramount Pictures production is meant to be a spiritual successor to the first two Scary Movie films from the early 2000s, rather than a follow-up to 2013’s Scary Movie V, given that the Wayans brothers will be returning to the franchise after the release of Scary Movie 2.
Scary Movie 6 is predicted to get a Rotten score on RT
Scary Movie is expected to earn a Rotten Tomatoes rating in the low 30s, according to a bet on Kalshi (as of May 29). A film needs to have 60% of its critic reviews to be positive for it to receive a “Fresh” rating, so it’s predicted to earn a “Rotten” label instead. The full spread for the bet show that many believe reviewers will pan the reboot:
- Above 10 (Rotten Tomatoes rating) – 92% chance
- Above 15 – 83%
- Above 20 – 71%
- Above 25 – 67%
- Above 30 – 58%
- Above 40 – 37%
- Above 45 – 28%
- Above 50 – 20%
- Above 55 – 18%
- Above 60 – 14%
- Above 65 – 9%
- Above 70 – 9%
- Above 75 – 4%
- Above 80 – 5%
- Above 85 – 3%
- Above 90 – Less than 1%
- Above 95 – Less than 1%
As always, these predictions are highly subject to change, especially as we head closer to the theatrical release of Scary Movie within the week. The review embargo for the reboot is not yet known, despite it being quite close to its June 5 release, which typically means that reviews will drop only a few days before its debut.
Delving into the history of the market, which started on May 10, the predicted range of Scary Movie’s RT score has mostly gone from a low of 27% to a high of 34%. So there hasn’t been too much fluctuation on what betters think so far. A similar wager on Polymarket has roughly 29% believing that the movie will score higher than a 50%.
This low-30s projection for the film’s Rotten Tomatoes rating would put Scary Movie in the middle of the pack when compared to other entries in the franchise. The original Scary Movie from 2002 has a 52% critics rating on the site, while 2003’s Scary Movie 3 sits at a 36% and 2006’s Scary Movie 4 is holding at a 34% rating. However, it would be much higher than the dismal 13% rating for 2001’s Scary Movie 3 and far better than the even more disastrous 4% rating for 2013’s Scary Movie V. The audience scores for all five installments range from 38% to 53%, so they haven’t been fan-favorites.
That said, parodies of the horror genre don’t have a strong reputation with critics. Films like 2010’s Vampires Suck, 2013’s A Haunted House, and 2009’s Stan Helsing have been universally panned by reviewers. That doesn’t mean there isn’t any hope in the genre, given the high scores for 2004’s Shaun of the Dead and 2011’s Tucker & Dale vs Evil, but they’re the exception to the rule.
Despite all this, Scary Movie has received encouraging box office predictions. The May 29 report from BoxOffice Pro believes the film will earn $42 million to $53 million in its domestic opener. This is a substantial improvement over its prior projection of $25 million to $35 million, showing that momentum is growing for the reboot.
