Superman: James Gunn Celebrates Brainiac Ahead of Man of Tomorrow DCU Debut

James Gunn teases potential clues on Brainiac‘s role in DCU‘s Man of Tomorrow. The Superman director took to social media to mark Brainiac’s DC Comics debut anniversary while dropping key details on the character’s clash with Man of Steel in the upcoming movie.

What did James Gunn say about Brainiac?

Brainiac will make his live-action debut in next year’s Man of Tomorrow. While details on the role, which is played by Lars Eidinger, remain largely under wraps, director Gunn recently teased some key plot points about what fans can expect.

Gunn posted a photo of Brainiac on his Instagram, celebrating the supervillain’s 68th DC Comics debut anniversary. He first appeared in 1958’s ACTION COMICS #242.

Explaining why Brainiac and Superman don’t usually get along, he wrote, “Brainiac is what happens when intelligence loses ALL connection to humanity. And Superman is as human as anyone, so… I get why they have beef.”

Last year, rumors circulated suggesting Dave Bautista was the top choice for Brainiac. Gunn eventually refuted the speculations, clarifying, “I freaking love [Bautista] & I have many ideas for who he could play in the DCU. But he & I have never discussed a role in Man of Tomorrow, nor have we discussed it amongst ourselves at DC.” Later, Eidinger was confirmed for the role.

Man of Tomorrow will bring back David Corenswet as Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Additionally, Milly Alcock, who’s set to appear in her own standalone movie next month, will return as Supergirl. Other key cast members include Skyler Gisondo, Frank Grillo, and Sara Sampaio, among others.

The Man of Tomorrow movie is set to hit theaters on July 9, 2027.
