Clayface Movie Adds Oscar Winning Talent From Dune Franchise

DC Studios has hired an Oscar-winning composer for its upcoming film, Clayface. The additions further bolster a project already backed by horror specialist Mike Flanagan. The film, which promises a visceral take on the Batman villain, enters a new phase of production with a decorated artist now attached to make its score.

Volker Bertelmann to score DCU’s Clayface movie

Volker Bertelmann will compose the score for the DCU’s first true horror-thriller, aka Clayface (via filmmusicreporter.com). The German-born composer won the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 2023 for his work on All Quiet on the Western Front. His connection to the Dune franchise stems from scoring the HBO television series Dune: Prophecy. Additional credits include Conclave, Lion, and Adrift.

Bertelmann, who also records experimental piano music under the name Hauschka, joins Clayface, already getting attention for its disturbing imagery. The recently released teaser trailer features the track “Do You Realize??” by The Flaming Lips and introduces Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen. The character lies bandaged and bloodied in a hospital bed before the footage cuts to flashes of a disfiguring attack. The teaser ends with Hagen in a bathtub, using his hand to wipe the features from his own face.

James Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini. The story originated with Flanagan, who approached DC Studios co-chief James Gunn with the concept during the early days of the rebooted universe. Studio materials describe Clayface as the story of one man’s collapse from a rising Hollywood actor into a monster driven by vengeance. Themes of lost identity, destructive love, and scientific overreach anchor the narrative.

The cast includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella, and Eddie Marsan. Nancy Carroll and Joshua James also feature in supporting roles. Clayface is scheduled to release in cinemas on October 23.
