What happens in the Gundi trailer?

The video introduces Pavel Ivanov as the titular Bulgarian footballer, who rose to international stardom after scoring Bulgaria’s historic first-ever goal in the 1962 World Cup in Chile. The trailer highlights his impressive but short football career and influence in his country, while also spotlighting his love story with his wife, Lita. Before his sudden death in 1971 at the age of 28, Asparuhov was able to represent his country at the World Cup three times, including 1966’s London tournament and 1970’s Mexico tournament.

Gundi: Legend of Soccer was directed by Dimitar Dimitrov, with Emil Bonev and Velichka Markova-Lita writing the screenplay. The movie also stars Aleksandra Svilenova as Lita and Dimiter D. Marinov as Asparuh. During its 2024 theatrical run in Bulgaria, it became the highest-grossing release in the country’s box office history. It was also the first title to sell more than 500,000 tickets in Bulgaria since 1989, wrapping up its run with roughly $5.7 million.

“This is the story of a man who refused to compromise his principles even when the state demanded it,” Dimitrov said in a statement. “Gundi’s legacy transcends football — he represents the human spirit’s refusal to be controlled.”

The movie was produced by Vasil Bulyanski, Andrei Arnaudov, Ivan Hristov, Jordan Markov, and Alexander Zdravkov for Medium Station 15. Following its debut in Bulgaria, the film won multiple awards, including Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Leading Actress at the Bulgarian Film Academy Awards.

Studio Dome COO Tom Malloy added, “With the World Cup approaching, audiences will connect with this story of an athlete who stood for something greater than the game. We’re proud to bring this award-winning biographical drama to American audiences.”
