Classic ’80s Superhero Movie Coming To Prime Video Before Reboot Release

A slice of ‘80s nostalgia will soon be added to Prime Video‘s catalog, as a 1987 cult superhero movie arrives on the platform ahead of its reboot’s worldwide theatrical release. Both adaptations are based on Mattel’s iconic toy line, which has since inspired several shows and films.

1987’s Masters of the Universe debuts on Prime Video in June

1987’s Masters of the Universe will land on Prime Video’s streaming platform on Monday, June 1, 2026.

The film is based on the Mattel toy line of the same name, which launched in 1982. Even though the toys debuted just five years earlier, this film was not the first to feature its characters. It was preceded by several adaptations, including the iconic animated series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and the animated feature The Secret of the Sword.

Gary Goddard directed the 1987 film with a script from David Odell. It stars Dolph Lundgren as He-Man, Frank Langella as Skeletor, Meg Foster as Evil-Lyn, Billy Barty as Gwildor, Courteney Cox as Julie, Jon Cypher as Man-At-Arms, and Chelsea Field as Teela, among others.

Masters of the Universe centers on Prince Adam/He-Man. He fights the evil Skeletor for control of Castle Grayskull and the planet Eternia. After Skeletor takes control of Eternia, He-Man and his allies are forced to flee.

Meanwhile, an artifact called Cosmic Key that can open the door to any realm falls into the hands of two unsuspecting teenagers, Julie and Kevin, on Earth. When they accidentally trigger a signal, Skeletor’s second-in-command, Evil-Lyn, sends forces to retrieve the key while the heroes try to protect the teenagers.

Masters of the Universe debuted in cinemas on August 7, 1987, but failed to impress any moviegoer at the time. On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently has a 21% critics’ approval rating, while the user score is 41%. On IMDb, it has a score of 5.4/10 from nearly 50K users. And at the box office, it made roughly $17.3 million, against a $22 million budget. However, the film has reached a wider audience since and has gained a cult following.
