Directed by Tim Burton, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice serves as the sequel to the 1988 supernatural comedy Beetlejuice. The film was released theatrically in the United States and Canada on September 6, 2024, and marked Burton’s return to the franchise decades after the original film became a cult classic.
The story begins after a sudden family tragedy brings the Deetz family back to Winter River. Lydia Deetz is now working as a paranormal talk show host while raising her teenage daughter, Astrid. The situation takes a dangerous turn after the latter discovers the miniature model of Winter River hidden inside the attic and accidentally opens a portal connected to the Afterlife. The incident leads to the return of Betelgeuse, whose presence once again creates chaos for the Deetz family.
As supernatural disturbances begin affecting both worlds, Lydia is forced to confront her past experiences while trying to protect Astrid from the growing danger surrounding them. The sequel stars Michael Keaton as Betelgeuse alongside Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz and Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz. Jenna Ortega joins the franchise as Astrid Deetz. Meanwhile, Justin Theroux and Willem Dafoe appear as Rory and Wolf Jackson, respectively.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the sequel currently holds a 75 percent critics’ score based on 379 reviews. Meanwhile, audiences have given the film a 78 percent rating.
