What did Hugh Jackman say about The Death of Robin Hood?
As the narrator, Jackman reveals how Robin Hood’s character has darker layers than just being a hero who steals from the rich and gives to the needy. “In the earliest tellings, Robin Hood’s portrayed as a famous cutthroat. In the 15th century ballad, a jest of Robyn Hode, Robin tracks the sheriff of Nottingham, fells him with an arrow and takes his head with a sword. Yet from these grim beginnings emerged a hero. The romantic ideal of Robin Hood has long captured the public imagination.”
The reality, however, is more brutal than one can imagine. During the medieval period, it was tough to survive the challenges, and that’s what The Death of Robin Hood tries to show. It presents “Robin as an aging recluse in the throes of a life governed by fighting and stealing to survive.”
In this new adaptation of 17-century story, Robin Hood’s Death, the character is hunted as a Pariah and outlaw. “As he approaches death, he must make peace with the sins of his past. In the literary tradition, two key figures emerge, The Prioress. Stories of Robin Hood’s death describe an ailing Robin portrayed by a wicked Prioress during a bloodletting. But what if the roles were reversed? Robin as the sadistic menace and the Prioress, his noble caregiver.”
The movie is directed by Michael Sarnoski, known for his previous projects like A Quiet Place: Day One, Pig, and IF.
Apart from Jackman, The Death of Robin Hood also stars Jodie Comer (28 Years Later, The Last Duel, Free Guy) as the Prioress and Bill Skarsgård (It, It: Welcome to Derry, Nosferatu) as Little John. Other key cast members include Murray Bartlett and Noah Jupe.
A24’s The Death of Robin Hood is set to release on June 19, 2026.
