After 27 Years, 1 Toy Story Character Is Finally Talking but There’s a Twist

A silent character from the Toy Story franchise will speak for the first time in the upcoming Part 5. The scene takes place under very specific narrative circumstances.

The animation returns with Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and Joan Cusack reprising their roles as Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and Jessie. New cast members include Conan O’Brien as a potty-training toy and Greta Lee as an antagonistic tablet named Lilypad, part of a “Toy meets Tech” storyline. Yet perhaps the most unexpected addition involves a long-mute member of Andy’s toy box finally finding a voice, albeit temporarily.

Alan Cumming voicing Evil Bullseye in Toy Story 5

Alan Cumming has joined the voice cast of Toy Story 5 to play Evil Bullseye. The character is a change from the familiar horse that has been Woody’s loyal companion since the 1999 film, the second in the franchise. Cumming describes the role as an “incredible honour,” adding he feels “so happy and proud and in disbelief” to enter the Pixar universe.

The decision to give Bullseye a voice after nearly three decades of silence was not taken lightly. “Obviously, [that was] a big decision…what voice to give him,” Cumming said, as per LADbible. “So we went around the houses a bit before we settled on the one we’re using,” he added. Further, the actor suggested the film’s context clarifies the creative latitude taken. “The circumstances of him talking — once you see the film — will make you understand why we had quite a broad church to choose from.”

Those circumstances are specific. Bullseye reportedly does not gain the power of speech in the film’s primary reality. Instead, Cumming provides the voice during a playtime sequence set entirely within the imagination of a character named Blaze, where the horse adopts a villainous alter ego. The actor tempers expectations regarding screen time. “Well, I would say don’t expect too much, as it is a cameo,” he notes, adding, “But it is quite exciting as this character has never had a voice before.”

The upcoming Part 5 releases on June 19.
