Denis Villeneuve’s James Bond 26 To Reinvent 007 After Daniel Craig’s Era

Writer Steven Knight suggested that James Bond 26 will reinvent 007 with a darker, grounded style for modern fans. With Denis Villeneuve directing, the next Bond film aims to refresh the aging spy franchise.

Steven Knight gives creative update on James Bond 26

Knight recently revealed to Screen Daily that he has been researching real-world intelligence operations while writing the new Bond script. It includes conversations with “the SAS and even more secret outfits” to better understand modern espionage.

He explained that much of Ian Fleming’s original Bond material came from real wartime experiences and people the author personally knew. “The author… was living that life. In the war, he was doing those things. He knew people doing that stuff, going out there and killing people,” Knight shared.

The writer also said he feels comfortable reinventing Bond because the character has survived decades of changes. “Bond has been bulletproof,” he explained, adding that even major creative shifts never damaged the core appeal of the spy icon. He described the character as “folklore” and compared Bond’s lasting identity to a “diamond,” saying, “The character has survived because the core of it is like a diamond. You can’t touch it.”

That update is likely good news for longtime Bond fans because the series has already gone through several iterations over the years. Since Sean Connery first played 007 in 1962’s Dr. No, the role has also been portrayed by Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, and others before Daniel Craig took over for five game-changing instalments. Each actor brought a different tone, from campy adventure to darker realism.

After Craig’s emotional farewell in No Time to Die, the franchise now faces the challenge of introducing another version of Bond without repeating old ideas. That could be the reason why Villeneuve and Knight might be taking a more grounded and modern approach, which could help the franchise feel exciting again instead of simply recycling past formulas.
