James Franco Teases Hollywood Comeback in ‘Big Studio Movie’

James Franco, who took a hiatus from acting in Hollywood following a series of sexual misconduct allegations, is on the verge of a comeback. The Spider-Man actor has revealed that he’ll be back in a big-budget film soon.

What did James Franco say about his Hollywood comeback?

Speaking with Deadline at Cannes 2026, Franco said that he is lined up for a role in a “big studio movie.” The film, according to the actor, has already been shot, but “it won’t be ready for this summer, but my guess is it will be end of this year or spring-summer 2027.” While the actor didn’t reveal what the movie was, he did reveal key details about the film’s production and distribution.

“That was New Line and then they let us sell it to A24,” said Franco.

Franco’s Hollywood comeback is beginning after he faced sexual misconduct accusations in 2018 and settled a class-action lawsuit in 2021. His last studio movie was The Disaster Artist, so it’s been nearly a decade since audiences saw the actor on the big screen.

Since settling the class-action lawsuit, the actor has faced challenges returning to the big screen. Franco’s long-time screen partner, Seth Rogen, with whom he shared the screen on Pineapple Express and The Interview, recently avoided taking his name in a Drew  Barrymore interview.

While Franco is set to return to Hollywood soon, it’s not the first film on the actor’s resume. As reported by Deadline, Franco has had four back-to-back films that debuted at Cannes. This time, the actor was promoting the Timothy Woodward Jr.-directed thriller Foster, which he also produced.

Foster sees Franco play the title character, who’s a veteran backed into a compromising situation upon his return home to the U.S. The film is set in the 1980s. When asked whether he has been treated unfairly by Hollywood in recent years, Franco offered a positive outlook.

“I don’t know. What am I going to do? I just go forward and try to live a positive life,” he said. “You know what I mean? Honestly, like, I just try to be the best person I can be… I think I was put on this planet to make movies. I try to make movies the best I can and it’s kinda like all I can do.”

Franco currently has nine films in the pipeline, according to IMDb.
