Christopher Nolan Clears the Air on The Odyssey’s Armor Controversy

Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic The Odyssey confounded many fans with its first trailer, showing Odysseus and his Greek soldiers wearing armor that appeared historically inaccurate. Ahead of the film’s release, Nolan has addressed the creative choice regarding Agamemnon’s armor look in the movie.

Christopher Nolan talks about Agamemnon’s armor in The Odyssey

In an interview with Time, Nolan spoke at great length about the amount of research that went into ensuring The Odyssey is accurate to the time period of the myth.

“There are Mycenaean daggers that are blackened bronze. The theory is they probably could have blackened bronze in those days. You take bronze, you add more gold and silver to it and then use sulfur,” said Nolan. “With Agamemnon, Ellen [Mirojnick], our costume designer, is trying to communicate how elevated he is relative to everyone else. You do that through materials that would be very expensive.”

The first look at Agamemnon’s matte black armor came with the movie’s first teaser, drawing considerable ire from fans. Agamemnon, the King of Mycenae and commander of the Greek army, is played by Benny Safdie. That’s not the only controversy the film is facing, as Nolan has also defended Travis Scott’s casting, who plays a surprising role.

Nolan also spoke about how the film will have explanations for every production choice, with all costumes and props drawing from both the Bronze Age and Homer’s era. “The oldest depictions of Homeric characters tend to be depicted in the manner of people living in Homer’s time,” he says. “So there’s a pretty strong case there for portraying things that way because that’s the way the first audience received the story.”

The Odyssey is an important film for Nolan, which will veer into the supernatural by using the physical environment to convey the Greek gods’ presence during Odysseus’ journey. It’s a film that has been positioned as the pinnacle of lead actor Matt Damon’s career.

The Odyssey also features a star-studded cast that may work against it. The Odyssey is set to premiere in theaters on July 17, 2026.
