Emily Blunt & Rebecca Ferguson’s R-Rated Movie Is Arriving on Netflix Soon

Netflix is adding a 2016 erotic thriller starring Emily Blunt and Rebecca Ferguson to its catalog next month. Based on a best-selling novel, the story centers on an alcoholic divorcee who becomes involved in a missing person’s case after witnessing an unsettling incident from her train window.

The Girl on the Train hits Netflix next month

The Girl on the Train begins streaming on Netflix from Monday, June 1.

It is based on Paula Hawkins’ novel of the same name. In an interview, she said she got the idea from her own commute in London. “It was above ground, so I would peer into the houses close to the line and imagine what could be going on inside, particularly anything sinister,” she explained (via The Times).

Tate Taylor directed the film adaptation, and Erin Cressida Wilson wrote its screenplay. Unlike in the book, where the story takes place in London, the events in the film happen in upstate New York.

The Girl on the Train centers on Rachel, an unemployed, divorced, and recovering alcoholic woman, who rides the same train every day. During her commute, she obsessively watches a couple near her old home from the train window. One day, the woman she watches, Megan, suddenly disappears. Rachel becomes involved in the investigation while struggling with blackouts and unreliable memories.

The film’s cast features Emily Blunt as Rachel, Rebecca Ferguson as Anna, Haley Bennett as Megan, Justin Theroux as Tom, Luke Evans as Scott, Lisa Kudrow as Martha, and Allison Janney as Riley.

The Girl on the Train was released in the United States on October 7, 2016. Despite its strong leading cast, the film didn’t receive favorable reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently holds a 44% Tomatometer score and a 49% Popcornmeter score. The sentiment carried to Metacritic, where the film has a critics’ score of 48 and a user score of  6.1.

Nonetheless, the film was a box office success. It earned $173.1 million from global markets against a reported $45 million budget.
