Barry Keoghan talks about facing online abuse and his desire to move forward

Barry Keoghan has appeared in several acclaimed projects in recent years. He is set to portray Ringo Starr in Sam Mendes’ anticipated four-part Beatles biopic, and recently spoke to Variety.

During the feature, the actor discussed the online hate he has faced. It included criticism involving his son and allegations that he was an “absent father.” However, Keoghan said he is looking forward to moving on from the criticism and debates and “closing the book” on this chapter of his life.

Previously, Keoghan spoke to Louis Theroux about the online criticism involving his son, who was born in 2022 with a former partner. He said he faced accusations of being an “absent father.” In another instance, Keoghan also addressed criticism about his appearance. He said it made him “really go inside myself, not want to attend places, not want to go outside.”

However, Keoghan now wants to move beyond it all. He told Variety in the recent interview that he wants to “step into a new chapter of my life where I let my work speak for me … I want to close the book on it, put my head up, have a smile and enjoy the moment.” His upcoming role as Ringo Starr may have influenced this mindset.

“I feel like I just read that line off something. I didn’t, but I did look out the window as I said it and smiled,” Keoghan added.

He further spoke about his new approach to acting, saying, “I carefully, cautiously pick because I just want to enjoy, and I want to heal, I want to tell, I want to find, I want to explore. I want to discover all of those things while I’m making a movie with people who are like-minded.”
