Robert Downey Jr. makes a surprise NewsNation cameo
During NewsNation CUOMO’s Tuesday, May 12, 2026, episode, Oscar-winning actor Robert Downey Jr. made an unexpected appearance.
However, unlike the segment’s regular format, where host Chris Cuomo engages with the audience via phone, the Tropic Thunder actor was physically present in the control room next to CUOMO’s producer, Dusty. Upon seeing him, the host jokingly said, “Is that Aquaman?”
The then actor went on to praise the show and the people behind it, adding, “All I watch is NewsNation.”
Dusty attempted to return the favor by praising the Oppenheimer star, but the actor cut her off and jokingly said, “I’m announcing my candidacy.” Cuomo responded, “For mayor of New York City?”
Dusty then implied that The Judge actor would run for the 2029 New York City mayoral election, though he quickly declined.
NewsNation’s CUOMO is a nightly commentary program focusing on politics, current events, and other major topics. The show also features a segment, Have Your Say with Chris, in which Cuomo engages with viewers by phone. The show airs on weeknights at 8 p.m./7C.
Robert Downey Jr.’s appearance comes just a few days after the 10th anniversary of Captain America: Civil War. Meanwhile, he is gearing up for his return in the MCU later this year with Avengers: Doomsday.
Instead of reprising his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man, he will portray Doctor Doom. Chris Evans is also returning to the franchise and will reprise his role as Steve Rogers/Captain America. The Russo Brothers are directing the fifth Avengers film with a stacked ensemble cast.
Avengers: Doomsday will debut in theaters on December 18, 2026.
