Underrated 2008 Movie Proved A Quiet Place 3’s Jack O’Connell Excels in Horror
Jack O’Connell has made a name for himself in the industry for playing dark and intense villainous roles. He made waves most especially for his role in Sinners as the Irish vampire Remmick. However, long before he became attached to high-profile projects like Sinners and 28 Years Later, he had already shown his horror potential as a young actor in an underrated 2008 British horror-thriller.
Increasingly considered a modern horror king (or scream king, if you will), O’Connell is known for bringing charisma and intensity to his roles, particularly his psychopathic and villainous ones. While he has slowly established a reputation as a menacing antagonist in Sinners and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, his résumé extends beyond horror, showcasing his versatility as an actor. That includes films like Unbroken, ’71, Jungleland, Back to Black, and more.
O’Connell is undoubtedly an excellent actor regardless of genre, but there’s no denying he excels in the darker side of cinema. He is also set to star in the upcoming third installment of A Quiet Place, adding to his growing list of horror projects. Perhaps unbeknownst to some, though, the actor had already showcased his knack for playing a convincing villain during the early years of his career.
What is the 2008 movie that showcased Jack O’Connell’s horror chops?
The late 2000s had a long list of standout horror films, which made it easier for some to fade into the background. Eden Lake, although recognized for its visceral premise, is unfortunately one of those movies. While it did not earn massive numbers upon its release, critics now regard the James Watkins–directed feature as an underrated gem.
Eden Lake follows a young couple (played by Kelly Reilly and Michael Fassbender) spending a weekend getaway at a remote lake, only to have their romantic plans cut short when a group of hostile teenagers brutally hunt them. Lauded for its social commentary and brutal storytelling, the film also earned praise for its performances, including O’Connell, who played psychopathic leader Brett.
Having starred in Eden Lake at around 17 to 18 years old, it was already displayed early on that O’Connell makes for a great villain. He has such an undeniable talent to fully embody unsettling, morally complex characters, which he ultimately showcased yet again in his most recent roles.
Eden Lake wasn’t a great horror movie because the actors, including O’Connell himself, were good in it. After all, it earned the status of an underrated gem for its compelling plot and brutal execution. It’s an added bonus that both Reilly and Fassbender delivered strong performances, and O’Connell stood out as a chilling young antagonist viewers can’t help but hate.
