The team behind Hokum recently spoke about the movie scenes that scared them the most growing up. Director Damian McCarthy and star Adam Scott both picked very different moments.
Damian McCarthy and Adam Scott reveal which horror scenes gave them the most trauma
During an interview with ScreenRant, director Damian McCarthy spoke about the horror scene that affected him most, and he immediately pointed to the 1998 Japanese horror film Ringu, which later received a Hollywood remake as The Ring in 2002. McCarthy specifically mentioned the famous television scene.
He said, “In terms of that fear, it was… I first saw Hideo Nakata’s Ringu (The Ring). They remade it as The Ring. When Sadako first comes out of that TV, it was terrifying. It was absolutely so simple, and it’s not even like a jump scare. She’s making her way across the whole screen and then climbs out. I was like, that’s amazing. That’ll never be topped in terms of, for me anyway, as a horror image.”
The conversation later shifted to the parody version from Scary Movie. McCarthy laughed about it, saying, “Yeah. But I saw it so early. It was like, you know, it hadn’t become a thing yet. So yeah.”
Meanwhile, Adam Scott picked a completely different kind of fear. He named a scene from the 1976 thriller Marathon Man, and his reason felt more psychological. He said, “I think for me, the scene in Marathon Man, where Dustin Hoffman’s in the bathtub and people are breaking into his apartment, he can’t see what’s going on.”
“He just sees some shadows under the door, and you can hear whispering. I saw it at probably too young an age, and it’s kind of haunted me my whole life,” Scott added. Their new film Hokum arrived in theaters on May 1, 2026, and fans have already been talking about it quite a bit.
The movie centers around a writer staying at a remote Irish hotel where strange supernatural events slowly begin surrounding him. The reaction has been really strong from both critics and audiences. Hokum currently holds an 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, while fan reviews sit at 84%.
