Motor City Trailer Review: Alan Ritchson Shows Emotional Side in New Action Movie

The Motor City trailer is out now, previewing a new action movie starring Reacher’s Alan Ritchson, and showcasing a potentially more emotional role for the star who typically shows his more badass side in action movies.

Motor City will be released in United States theaters this summer by Independent Film Company. Directed by Potsy Ponciroli, the film stars Ritchson, Shailene Woodley, and more. In addition to Ritchson and Woodley, the cast of the movie includes Pablo Schreiber (Halo, Orange is the New Black), Ben Foster (Hell or High Water, Leave No Trace), and Ben McKenzie (Southland, Gotham).

The official synopsis reads, “In 1970s Detroit, a working-class romantic is framed by a ruthless gangster after falling for his girlfriend. After years in prison, he returns with only one mission: revenge. With operatic scale, Motor City unleashes a barrage of brutal action, magnetic performances, and striking imagery, fueled by a thunderous rock score, precision-crafted action, and immersive sound design to create a visceral, propulsive spectacle built to electrify audiences this summer.”

Motor City trailer review

The trailer for Motor City doesn’t show a whole lot off in terms of plot. Instead we’re treated to Ritchson’s character working out in jail, as he plots his revenge for being wrongly imprisoned by a gangster. However, the trailer does seem to hint at what might end up being one of the most emotional and driven roles of Ritchson’s career.

The movie focuses on Ritchson’s character, described as a “working-class romantic,” being wrongfully imprisoned by a gangster who falls in love with his girlfriend. In the trailer, we briefly see shots of his girlfriend, who seems to drive Ritchson forward in his quest for revenge.

While the movie is likely to be a standard action thriller by most parts, Ritchson’s role is unique here. His turns are usually based around more standard, “badass” characters, such as his roles in films like Reacher or War Machine. Those saw him portray rugged, military-type characters tasked with saving a ton of people with machismo to spare.

In this movie, though, it seems like Ritchson is fighting for something much more personal. Hopefully, this will allow him to showcase some of his skill that he otherwise wouldn’t get the chance to.
