Daisy Ridley’s New Rom-Com With Star Wars Alum Gets Release Date Window & Plot

A new romantic comedy led by Daisy Ridley is officially on the way, and it’s bringing along a familiar face from the Star Wars universe. With a tropical backdrop, a strong creative team, and a release timeline now confirmed, the film is shaping up as a mix of escapism and emotional storytelling.

The Last Resort reveals release date window and plot details

The Last Resort is set to arrive in U.S. theaters in 2027, with distribution handled by Vertical, as per Deadline. Meanwhile, Voltage Pictures will oversee international sales and present the film at the Cannes market. The project is already completed, and audiences won’t have to wait too long for its rollout.

The story centers on a high-powered New York hotel executive played by Ridley. She travels to the Philippines to scout a luxury resort location, focused entirely on her career goals. But things take a turn when she meets a laid-back expatriate pilot, played by Solo: A Star Wars Story actor Alden Ehrenreich. What begins as a work trip slowly turns into a personal dilemma, as she must choose between her professional ambitions and a completely different life path.

The film is directed by Donald Petrie, known for romantic hits like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, with a script from Karen McCullah, who wrote Legally Blonde. Producers said that pairing the two felt natural, noting Petrie’s ability to find emotional depth and McCullah’s talent for writing relatable characters. “Donald has a real instinct for finding the heart in these kinds of stories, and Karen writes characters that feel honest and lived-in,” said producers.

Filmed on location in the Philippines, the movie uses its setting as more than just scenery. As one executive put it, the visuals help turn the location into “both a character and a destination,” adding to the film’s appeal. The cast also includes Sam Neill, Tia Carrere, and Jo Koy.

With a blend of romance, career stakes, and scenic storytelling, the film aims to deliver a classic rom-com feel while offering something visually fresh.
