Billion Dollar NSFW Movie Trilogy Is Leaving Netflix Soon

An R-rated erotic trilogy is scheduled to leave Netflix’s library next month. Despite the overwhelming negative reception, the franchise has grossed $1.32 billion at the global box office, owing to each entry’s well-timed release around Valentine’s Day.

Fifty Shades trilogy is leaving Netflix next month

Netflix subscribers won’t be able to stream Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker, and Fifty Shades Freed from Monday, June 1, 2026.

The franchise is based on E. L. James’ trilogy book series of the same name. Sam Taylor-Johnson directed the original film, and James Foley helmed both sequels. Similarly, Kelly Marcel wrote the screenplay for the first one, and Niall Leonard wrote the screenplays for the remaining two.

The Fifty Shades trilogy follows Anastasia “Ana” Steele (Dakota Johnson), a literature student, and Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan), a wealthy businessman with controlling tendencies. In the first film, Fifty Shades of Grey, the two begin a complex romantic relationship controlled by Grey’s desire for BDSM.

In Fifty Shades Darker, they reunite under Ana’s terms while Christian confronts his past. And in the final film, Fifty Shades Freed, they build a life together while facing external threats that challenge their relationship.

Among the three films, the original film has the highest rating on the review-aggregator site. Released on February 13, 2015, the critics gave Fifty Shades of Grey an average rating of 25%, and the audience handed it 41% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The sequel followed on February 10, 2017, and received an abysmal 11% critic score and a surprising 47% user score. The final installment premiered on February 9, 2018. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 11% critic score, while the audience score dropped to 38%.

Considering the trilogy’s commercial success, the general moviegoer seemed to care very little about ratings on online platforms. The original film was made on a $40 million budget and went on to gross $569.6 million worldwide. Both sequels had a budget of $55 million each and earned $381.5 million and $371.9 million, respectively.
