‘Tattooed on My Brain’: Anne Hathaway on Competitors for Devil Wears Prada Role
Anne Hathaway is revisiting one of the biggest moments from her career while promoting The Devil Wears Prada 2. Nearly twenty years after the original movie released, Hathaway opened up about getting cast as Andy Sachs.

The conversation happened during a joint Capital FM interview with Emily Blunt. Hathaway admitted, “I wasn’t the first choice to play Andy Sachs,” before adding that she was the ninth choice. A surprising revelation which the actress still remembers.
Blunt then asked Hathaway directly, “Can you name them?” Hathaway answered, “Of course I can, they’re tattooed on my brain all these years later.” However, Hathaway continued talking about how strange the audition process felt at the time.
She explained, “It was kind of amazing, because I’m just like, ‘Why is everyone turning down this amazing part in this amazing movie?’ I couldn’t figure it out.” Hathaway then added, “So now I like to, you know, kid myself and think that it was like some kind of destiny.”
The role eventually became one of the defining parts from her film career. Hathaway also spoke about why she kept chasing the role after several actresses reportedly passed on it. “The reason I felt really strongly that I should keep putting myself forward. I shouldn’t take my eye off the prize, was because the project just had this really unbelievable, almost mystical, magnetism to it, and I could feel it.”
She later summed up her mindset in a shorter way. “I just was like, ‘It doesn’t matter how you get on this project, just get on it.'” The original The Devil Wears Prada released in 2006 with Hathaway starring alongside Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci.
According to Marie Claire, actresses including Rachel McAdams, Juliette Lewis, Claire Danes, Kirsten Dunst, Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, and Kate Hudson were also considered for the role.
Now, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is playing in theaters after releasing on May 1.
