This Comedy Is Looking Like a Sleeper Box Office Hit

The comedy The Breadwinner starring Nate Bargatze and Mandy Moore has received a promising box office prediction that could position it as a sleeper hit in the summer. This is good news for the Sony Pictures production, which was delayed earlier this year from its initial release date of March 13 to May 29, 2026. The family-friendly film follows father Nate Wilcox (Nate Bargatze) who suddenly becomes the main caretaker of his three children after his wife Katie Wilcox (Mandy Moore) gets a business deal through the reality TV show Shark Tank. Nate thinks it will be easy to become a stay-at-home dad, but he soon realizes how much work it is to take care of three rambunctious daughters.

Nate Bargatze’s The Breadwinner received solid box office prediction

The Breadwinner is expected to earn $20 million to $29 million in its domestic opening weekend from May 29 to May 31. This is a higher projection than the film received earlier this year before it was delayed.

These domestic opening numbers come from a May 1 analysis from BoxOfficeTheory, which initially predicted that The Breadwinner would get $15 million to $24 million back in late January. The report provides several reasons for this optimistic box office forecast despite the tough road that traditional comedies have had in theaters, citing Nate Bargatze’s rising popularity through “his record-breaking stand-up comedy tours, steaming specials, viral skits from multiple Saturday Night Live, and numerous other entertainment industry appearances.”

Specifically, Netflix has posted compilations of the comedian’s jokes on YouTube that have collectively received over 21 million views. Also on the platform, his SNL skit Washington’s Dream has amassed 30 million views, while his SNL skit “Chef Show” has earned 13 million views. He was the host for the 2025 Emmy Awards, bringing him closer to being a household name, and his deadpan humor made the 47-year-old one of the highest-grossing stand-up comics in recent years. The Breadwinner represents his charge to break into the film industry as a writer, actor, and producer.

The report notes that early pre-sales for the summer comedy has had a long window in part due to its delay yet still had a “respectable volume,” which is a surprise for original comedies. It believes that the film could do particularly well “among middle America moviegoers with crossover appeal to faith- and values-based audiences.” Wonder Project, one of the production companies for the movie, is an independent film studio that partners with Amazon MGM Studios to create Christian-themed entertainment. Founded in 2023, the company has released shows like House of David on Prime Video.

A trailer for The Breadwinner, directed by Eric Appel and co-written by Bargatze and Dan Lagana, released in April that delved deeper into the story. It shows the struggles that stay-at-home dad Nate has figuring out the directions to his children’s school schedules, having to do night chores, and doing makeup with his daughters. The trailer has received better reactions from fans compared to the first official trailer in late December that received 5600 likes but 3500 dislikes (by way of the Return YouTube Dislike extension on Google Chrome).

The theatrical release of The Breadwinner was delayed two months due to Sony Pictures wanting to position the film for the post-Memorial Day weekend and the start of summer break for many school districts, according to studio insiders per TheWrap. It hopes to offer an alternative to the numerous animated sequels aimed at parent-kid audiences.

Another possible reason is that the film could have been cannibalized by Project Hail Mary, which has become a major family-friendly blockbuster for Amazon MGM Studios, that would have released one week after its initial March 13 release. That said, The Breadwinner’s new debut of May 29 now has it competing against Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu releasing on May 22.
