The Odyssey’s Christopher Nolan Says Homer Was Original Marvel & George Lucas

The Odyssey is shaping up to be more than just another epic adaptation. Director Christopher Nolan is leaning into the story’s deeper roots, drawing bold comparisons between ancient storytelling and today’s blockbuster culture. His latest comments put a fresh spotlight on why this centuries-old tale still hits like a modern spectacle.

Christopher Nolan compares Homer to Marvel and George Lucas

Speaking on The Late Show, Christopher Nolan explained how the original creator of The Odyssey, Homer, fits into today’s pop culture lens. He didn’t hold back, saying, “The thing about Homer… it is the Marvel of its day.” He added that these ancient stories sparked the same kind of fascination audiences now feel toward superhero worlds.

Nolan also compared Homer to George Lucas, pointing out how both helped shape massive storytelling universes. “Homer, in a way, is the sort of George Lucas of his time,” he said, explaining that the idea of gods walking among humans is something modern franchises still rely on. From Marvel films to DC stories, Nolan believes the blueprint goes back to these early epics.

The film itself is packed with major talent. Matt Damon leads as Odysseus, joined by Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, and Robert Pattinson in a key role. Nolan praised Holland during the interview, calling him “an incredible talent” and saying he’d happily work with him again.

Despite the massive scale, Nolan admitted that adapting such a legendary story comes with pressure. “Anyone taking on ‘The Odyssey’ is taking on the hopes and dreams of people for epic movies everywhere,” he said. He stressed that audiences want a “strong and sincere interpretation,” something he has aimed to deliver with this version.

Shot entirely on IMAX cameras and filmed across multiple global locations, the movie aims to blend classic storytelling with modern filmmaking. With a release date set for July 17, 2026, Nolan’s take on The Odyssey is building into one of the most anticipated films of the year.
