Barry Keoghan on why that Joker scene was cut from The Batman
Barry Keoghan addressed the removal of his Joker scene from The Batman during a WIRED Interview. The actor clarified that the studio did not fully delete the scene from existence. He noted that the team cut it from the theatrical release but released it separately after the film.
“It was deleted from the movie, but it still exists because, you know, it came out after the movie, which I thought was quite a nice moment,” Keoghan said. He acknowledged that audiences have a strong desire to see more of the Joker. The actor chose his words carefully, noting he could not say much on the topic.
Keoghan originally auditioned for the Riddler in The Batman before landing the Joker role. Paul Dano ultimately took the Riddler part instead. Keoghan also declined to confirm a future return as the Joker. “I cannot answer that question truly, sincerely,” he said. “Cannot talk about that.” His Fandom wiki page lists him as reprising the role in The Batman: Part II.
The Irish actor discussed his broader approach to playing complex characters. He rejected the idea that he deliberately seeks out strange roles. “I think I just play characters and then they end up being weird because I play them,” Keoghan said.
He expressed his love for complicated characters and relationships in film. He also enjoys giving audiences a “guilty pleasure” they want to watch. Keoghan applies truth and honesty to every part he takes on.
Keoghan also discussed playing Duke Shelby in Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man. He praised Cillian Murphy as one of Ireland’s greatest actors and admitted feeling nervous opposite Tommy Shelby. The actor also reflected on his character’s death in Dunkirk, recalling the intimate feel of filming on a small boat despite the film’s massive scale.
Warner Bros. has scheduled The Batman: Part II for October 1, 2027.
