Zach Galifianakis discusses why Between Two Ferns won’t work ‘at this moment’

Zach Galifianakis has weighed in on the possibility of reviving Between Two Ferns, suggesting that its tone may not align with the current climate.

Speaking on The Rich Eisen Show, he said, “I feel like we’re kind of living in meaner times right now and I’m not sure that that tonally might work at this moment. I don’t know. I don’t know,” indicating hesitation about bringing the format back in its original form.

During the discussion, host Rich Eisen noted that audiences are now more aware of the format, saying “people are kind of in on the gag at this point.” Galifianakis acknowledged that shift and responded, “I guess so. Maybe that is the reason to do one.” He also addressed the show’s bloopers, explaining that though the interviews appeared one-sided, they were not. The actor remarked that he had seen the bloopers and joked that his career often felt like a “blooper” itself.

“I’ve never been interested in pranking anyone. I always wanted to be a joint effort, but I never wanted the audience to think that. So then when we showed the bloopers, we kind of gave that up a little bit,” he added.

The series, known for its deliberately awkward celebrity interviews, ran intermittently from 2008 to 2018. It later expanded into a television special and the Netflix film Between Two Ferns: The Movie in 2019. Since then, Galifianakis has not filmed new episodes of the show. He is currently hosting This Is a Gardening Show, a nature-focused series on Netflix.
