According to Box Office Mojo, the Illumination sequel has earned $402.67 million domestically and $491.54 million internationally, bringing its global total to $894.22 million.

The animated sequel landed in third place this weekend at the domestic box office. It earned an estimated $12.1 million from 3,419 theaters. The film opened to $131.70 million domestically across 4,252 theaters during its debut. It held the number one spot for three consecutive weekends before slipping. Universal Pictures distributed the film with a reported production budget of $110 million.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie stands as the third video game adaptation to approach the $900 million milestone globally. A Minecraft Movie currently sits at $961.2 million worldwide, while the original Super Mario Bros. Movie earned $1.36 billion during its 2023 theatrical run. Variety projects the sequel will become the first film in 2026 to cross $1 billion at the global box office.

The film features Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina, and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr. Jack Black, who reprises his role as Bowser, hinted at a potential third installment in an interview with Cinemex, stating, “Don’t be surprised if you hear that coming out next time, in 2029.”

Nintendo also has The Legend of Zelda live-action film in production, directed by Wes Ball and currently filming in New Zealand. That adaptation stars Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bro Bragason as Princess Zelda, with a scheduled release date of May 7, 2027.
