Spider-Man: Brand New Day Director’s Latest Tease Has Fans Worried

Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton has shared a brief explanation of the theme of Tom Holland’s upcoming MCU movie. While Cretton’s statement did not give away any major plot points, a one-line comment on the web-slinger’s arc in the film seems to have caught fans’ attention.

Fans are worried about Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s ‘core’ theme

During his recent appearance on the Deadline Contenders TV panel for Wonder Man, the Shang-Chi director confirmed that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker will focus on “relearning how to connect with people” in his fourth solo MCU outing.

“I can’t say what happens, but I’m very, very excited about the movie,” Cretton said. “I’m really excited with the small test screenings and how it’s connecting with an audience. Of course, it’s a big blockbuster, it’s super fun, it’s got all the heart and humor that you want from a Spider-Man movie. But, at its core, it’s a movie about relearning how to connect with people, and I’m really excited to put it out in the world right now.”

Even though Destin Daniel Cretton’s comments did not reveal how Holland’s character would “connect with people” in Brand New Day, several Spider-Man fans think it could be a nod to MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon) regaining their memories of Peter Parker. If true, this would undo the ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

“I really hope the movie doesn’t end with Jean (assuming Sadie Sink is playing as her) restoring MJ’s and Ned’s memories,” wrote one fan. Another X (formerly Twitter) user noted, “Hopefully he just means people in general and not Peter just straight up reconnecting with Ned & MJ.”

A third concerned fan echoed similar sentiments by stating, “If that happens or the plot is related to that, the movie will suck.”

Another Spider-Man fan shared a different perspective on Cretton’s take, writing, “Nah it’s about peter regaining his human life after being spiderman for way too long avoiding his personal life.”

Fans will find out whether Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s theme leads Peter Parker to reconnect with his old friends or not when the movie hits theaters on July 31, 2026.
