James Gunn Explains Clayface’s Fate, May Have Spoiled Movie’s Ending
James Gunn might have dropped a spoiler regarding what happens to Matt Hagen, a.k.a. Clayface, in the movie ahead of its release. The DC Studios co-CEO earlier revealed its place in the DCU timeline, saying it took place before all movies and TV shows, including Superman. He also confirmed that the version of the character who showed up in Creature Commandos and fought Rick Flag Sr. and Eric Frankenstein is the same as the one fans will see in the live-action feature.

James Gunn reveals Clayface’s fate after Creature Commandos
On Threads, a fan asked James Gunn if it’s possible that Rick Flag Sr., played by Frank Grillo, is actually Clayface working under Amanda Waller. The Superman filmmaker responded that he wasn’t, effectively confirming that the latter didn’t assume the former’s identity.
When another enquired about what happened to the character after Creature Commandos, Gunn replied, “Back to prison.” His use of these words suggests that Matt Hagen was caught and imprisoned on some criminal charges before the series. Accordingly, fans may see him first being jailed at the end of the film.
Clayface premieres on October 23, 2026, during the Halloween season. Its official teaser debuted at CinemaCon on April 14 and dropped online a week later. The footage, which plays Flaming Lips’ “Do You Realize” in the background, touches upon Hagen’s tragic backstory and transformation into the titular character.
James Watkins, known for horror films like Eden Lake, The Woman in Black, and Speak No Evil, directed the movie, thus bringing his unique brand of filmmaking into the DC Universe. Meanwhile, Mike Flanagan, also recognized for his highly acclaimed body of work in horror, and Hossein Amini co-wrote the screenplay. Gunn and Peter Safran co-produced with The Batman filmmaker Matt Reeves (6th & Idaho Motion Picture Company) and Lynn Harris.
Tom Rhys Harries stars as Hagen, marking the actor’s DCU debut. The supporting cast includes Eddie Marsan, Max Minghella, Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Nancy Carroll, and Joshua James.
