Why The Devil Wears Prada 2 Has Better RT Score Than Original Despite Middling Reviews

Early reviews for The Devil Wears Prada 2 are finally starting to arrive online, and things are looking good for the sequel, having already surpassed the previous installment on Rotten Tomatoes. This comes ahead of the Meryl Streep sequel’s long-awaited theatrical release this Friday, May 8.

Why The Devil Wears Prada 2 has a better score on Rotten Tomatoes than the original?

Currently, The Devil Wears Prada 2 has already garnered a Certified Fresh score of 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 94 reviews. This is a bit higher than the first installment’s approval rating of 75%. Many critics have described the sequel as a fun and enjoyable movie, while also praising the returning main cast’s chemistry. Robbie Collin of the UK’s Daily Telegraph singled out Streep and Anne Hathaway’s performances, calling them “at the respective peaks of their comedic powers.”

Although some critics felt that the sequel doesn’t quite live up to the original’s charm, they acknowledged that the movie was really made for the fans, who have waited a long time for it. We Live Entertainment‘s Aaron Neuwirth said that even though the sequel “may not replicate the same sense of iconography as the first,” it still manages to recreate “that fun well enough and feels more balanced by consistently wearing its best looks.”

Even though a lot of the critics gave the movie low to mid-average scores, such as 2.5/4, 3/5, or 6/10, these are still counted as positive ratings on Rotten Tomatoes because the online review aggregator isn’t based on a weighted system like Metacritic. That’s why a 10/10 score still counts the same as 6/10. At the moment, it has a much better Rotten Tomatoes score compared to its current 61% Metacritic score, which is based on 37 critic reviews.

The sequel getting a better RT score than the original wasn’t really a surprise, especially when a lot of the reviews come from fans of the 2006 film. The Mary Sue‘s Rachel Tolleson, who gave the film a 4.5/5 rating, described the new installment as a “love letter to the first film, as well as to fans. There are just enough callbacks and cameos to satiate you without over-saturating the story. The points it makes are stiletto-sharp.”

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is once again directed by David Frankel from a screenplay written by Aline Brosh McKenna. The film reunites Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci as they reprise their iconic roles as Miranda Priestly, Andy Sachs, Emily Charlton, and Nigel Kipling. Joining them are Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, and more.
