Supergirl’s Major Creative Choice Is Already Dividing DCU Movie Fans
One creative decision in Supergirl is dividing DCU fans.
DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures’ Supergirl arrives in United States theaters and IMAX this June. Directed by Craig Gillespie, the movie will see Milly Alcock reprise her DCU role as Kara Zor-El after she briefly appeared at the end of 2025’s Superman, which was directed by James Gunn.
What Supergirl creative choice is dividing DCU fans?
Speaking with @TuSpoilerMx, Gillespie revealed that approximately one hour and ten minutes of the movie was filmed specifically for IMAX. This means that those who choose to see it in an IMAX theater will experience some major aspect ratio changes; those who see it in a normal theater, meanwhile, will just see some cropped versions of these scenes.
DC fans are split over whether this is a good creative decision or a bad one.
The synopsis for Supergirl reads, “When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.”
Written by Ana Nogueira, the cast of the movie also includes Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, David Krumholtz as Zor-El, Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze, Jason Momoa as Lobo, and Ferdinand Kingsley as Elias Knoll. Gunn is producing Supergirl alongside Peter Safran, while Nigel Gostelow, Chantal Nong Vo, and Lars P. Winther serve as executive producers.
Supergirl will be released on June 26, 2026.
Other DCU projects that are being released later this year after Supergirl include Lanterns and Clayface. The former of those two titles is expected to premiere on HBO Max in August, though an exact release date has not yet been set, while Clayface is currently dated for October 23, 2026.
