Dark Fantasy Movie Backed by Guillermo del Toro Sets Netflix Streaming Date

The dark fantasy feature I Am Frankelda is set to reach a wider audience as Netflix has confirmed its global streaming debut. Backed by Guillermo del Toro, the stop-motion film has drawn acclaim for its visual style and tone since its initial premiere. The newly announced release date will expand the film’s reach to a broader audience.

I Am Frankelda gets streaming release date on Netflix

Netflix has confirmed that I Am Frankelda will be available for global streaming starting June 12, 2026. The stop-motion feature, directed by Arturo Ambriz and Roy Ambriz, first premiered on June 6, 2025, and has since been picked up as part of Netflix’s 2026 animation lineup.

Set in 19th-century Mexico, the film follows Frankelda, a writer whose work is repeatedly dismissed despite her talent. Her story takes a turn when she is drawn into a world shaped by her own imagination, where the creatures from her writings exist as living beings. In this realm, she encounters Herneval, a prince who is caught between two connected worlds and seeks her help to prevent their collapse.

At the same time, Procustes moves to gain control, creating a direct conflict that places both realms at risk. Frankelda must rely on her abilities as a storyteller to influence the world she created while navigating the growing threat around her. The relationship between Frankelda and Herneval also develops as the story progresses.

The film’s voice cast includes Mireya Mendoza as Frankelda, Arturo Mercado Jr. as Herneval, Luis Leonardo Suárez as Procustes, Carlos Segundo as Ceimut, Beto Castillo as Rey Ficturo, and Assira Abbate as Tochina, among others.

Carlos Aguilar of Variety said in his review of the movie, “I Am Frankelda can feel a bit dense narratively, yet its many visual pleasures continually mesmerize. Every space looks lovingly handcrafted, often making us aware of the materials used in their arduous confection.” The critic added, “ If ‘go big or go home’ was a movie, this fits the bill.”
