Keira Knightley & Bridgerton Star Cast in New Adaptation of Oscar-Winning Movie

Keira Knightley is set to return to the stage with a new project. It also brings Luke Thompson into the spotlight again. The project is a stage adaptation of The Lives of Others, the 2006 Oscar-winning German film set during the cold war.

The original film came out in 2006. The story is set in East Berlin during 1984, a tense period under a controlled system. The plot follows a playwright and his partner as authorities constantly watch them.

The film mixes surveillance with emotion. It shows how such control can quietly change lives. Now, the team reimagines that story for the stage. Deadline has confirmed that Keira Knightley, Stephen Dillane, and Luke Thompson will lead the cast.

Sonia Friedman backs the production. Robert Icke directs the play and works closely with Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck on this version. The play will begin at the Adelphi Theatre on October 14, 2026, and run until January 9, 2027.

Friedman explained how they are approaching the story. “What we’re interested in is taking the characters and the heart of the story and the themes, and then finding our theatrical language.”

She continued, “And what’s exciting, is that he wants us to keep digging into the story and go as deep as we can, and take it to places that perhaps the film couldn’t just in terms of how we theatrically manifest the literal surveillance.”

Friedman also shared how Knightley joined the project. “She read it and within 24 hours she was in.” Knightley has not performed on stage in London for “a very long time.”

Friedman also spoke about the story itself. “It’s become more and more powerful and resonant, and dare I even say it, relevant about surveillance. And how fragile our freedoms are and how easily our freedoms can be eroded without us even noticing.”

Friedman also described the emotional layer of the story. “It’s a devastating love story. And at the heart of it, I think it’s about kindness.” That remains central to the adaptation. The story remains centered on the same characters.

Thompson will play Georg Dreyman; Knightley will portray Christa-Maria Sieland; Dillane will take on the character of Gerd Wiesler. The core story remains the same. The creative team wants to explore deeper themes.
