Supergirl Director Reveals Imax Footage Runtime & It’s a Lot
Director Craig Gillespie revealed a runtime that gave insight into Supergirl’s theatrical scale and revealed why this cosmic adventure demands the biggest screen.
Why you need to watch Supergirl in IMAX
During a presentation at CCXP Mexico 2026, held at Mexico City, Gillespie and star Milly Alcock shared 15 minutes of exclusive footage and a new trailer. But it was a specific statistic from the director that revealed the cosmic scale. When asked why audiences need to experience Supergirl on the big screen, Gillespie revealed the IMAX footage’s runtime.
“There’s some massive action sequences in this. We have a lot of action, a lot of large set pieces that in fact we’re going to have it in IMAX as well, which I think we have about an hour and ten minutes of IMAX footage, so it’s really exciting and we didn’t hold back,” Gillespie revealed.
An hour and ten minutes of IMAX presentation means more than half of Supergirl will expand to fill floor-to-ceiling screens, a ratio typically reserved for select sequences in major blockbusters. Audiences who opt for standard digital projection will see a cropped version of those same frames, losing the vertical information that Gillespie and cinematographer Rob Hardy composed for.
Furthermore, the footage shown at CCXP Mexico illustrated what that scale delivers. One sequence shows Kara and Ruthye on a bus when female alien assailants attempt a robbery, triggering a fight that escalates quickly. Another scene shows Kara flying directly into the sun to recharge her powers. A third introduces Jason Momoa’s Lobo with additional details about his entry into the story, among other sequences.
Gillespie also gave insight into why Milly Alcock can anchor a production of this size. “She’s so accessible, like she literally doesn’t have to be saying anything, and she can emote so much, and she’s so vulnerable with that, and it’s like that’s one of the superpowers.”
Supergirl is releasing on June 26, 2026.
