Thor To Fight Villain With the Strength of ‘Billion Beings’ in Next Appearance

Marvel’s God of Thunder stands on the verge of a fight he physically cannot win against a foe born from the hatred of an entire extinct species. The upcoming clash pits Thor against a classic villain whose power level makes most cosmic threats look modest by comparison.

Thor faces off against Mangog in new comic

Marvel’s Thor faces his most powerful adversary yet in The Ultimates #23, releasing April 29. The God of Thunder battles the Mangog as he and Sif fight to liberate the Nine Realms from Loki. Deniz Camp, Stipan Morian, and Travis Lanham deliver this penultimate Ultimate Universe chapter.

The Mangog first appeared in 1968 as one of Marvel’s most formidable beings. Odin created the creature by destroying an entire ancient species. Their collective hatred manifested physically, granting Mangog the combined strength of “a billion billion beings.” The entity enforces divine law and punishes gods who violate it. Thor’s power falls far short of matching its invulnerability.

Loki panics and unleashes the Mangog in a newly released preview of the issue. He offers to resurrect the creature’s extinct species if it destroys Thor. The preview additionally teases the Destroyer armor and the Casket of Ancient Winters.

The Maker warped Earth-6160’s history after traveling back in time in 2023. He blocked the origins of most mainstream superheroes but failed to prevent Thor’s. He settled for aiding Loki’s overthrow of Odin and takeover of Asgard. Loki imprisoned Thor following his successful coup. The Ultimates now work to dismantle the Maker’s regime across this reality. Sif switched sides and joined Thor’s revolution against her former king.

Meanwhile, cover art from Dike Ruan and German Peralta hints at a Thor versus Surtur confrontation. The Ultimate Universe imprint originally launched in 2000 and relaunched in 2023. However, Marvel revealed last year that the imprint will end permanently after the Ultimate Endgame event. As a result, Asgard’s characters receive something impossible in Earth-616 continuity.

Furthermore, the series distinguishes itself through ambitious splash pages and real-time storytelling. Each issue advances the in-world timeline by exactly one month.
