Why Tangled 2 Plans Were Canceled by Disney Finally Revealed
Disney’s 2010 animated feature Tangled was a huge box office success, but despite that, a Part 2 never materialized. Now, director Nathan Greno has given an explanation as the live-action version continues to build.
Nathan Greno explains why Tangled 2 never happened
Greno confirmed that Tangled 2 discussions did take place at Disney. Following the original film’s release, the studio organized an off-site meeting with the core creative team to explore sequel possibilities. The group spent hours deliberating but did not reach a satisfying conclusion.
“We actually did an off-site at Disney, and we got the original team together, and we really all talked about it for hours, and we kind of walked away saying, ‘We couldn’t find a story worth telling,’” the director told The Direct.
The main obstacle, according to Greno, was Tangled’s ending. Rapunzel’s journey from imprisoned princess to self-realized woman left little room for a meaningful continuation. He illustrated the creative dilemma by pointing to other fairy tale endings. “Once Pinocchio becomes a real boy, what else is there to say? Once the Beast becomes a human, what else is there to say?” Greno asked.
Unlike properties with expansive worlds or ensemble casts that lend themselves to sequels, Tangled was a completed character arc. Greno emphasized that he is not opposed to Tangled 2, but the team recognized that forcing a follow-up without a genuine creative reason would serve neither the characters nor the audience. Instead of a full-length sequel, the filmmakers addressed the most obvious loose thread: Rapunzel and Eugene’s wedding with the six-minute short Tangled Ever After, released in 2012.
While an animated Tangled 2 doesn’t seem to be on the cards, the franchise is moving forward in a new direction. A live-action remake is in active development with Michael Gracey, the one behind The Greatest Showman, as director. Teagan Croft will play Rapunzel, Milo Manheim takes on Flynn Rider, and Kathryn Hahn steps into the role of Mother Gothel. Filming is expected to commence this summer, with a theatrical release potentially happening in mid-to-late 2027.
