DCU Boss James Gunn Lists Favorite Underrated Comic Books With Images

Director James Gunn, who is the co-CEO of DC Studios, revealed a list of his favorite underrated comic books in a new post. Gunn is no stranger to the world of comics, having directed several films based on comics and superheroes. Gunn’s list includes a rather unusual set, with the likes of We3 and Promethea.

James Gunn, who helmed last year’s acclaimed Superman reboot and also currently heads the revamped DCU, opened up about his favorite offbeat comics. The Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad director shared his top five list with images on Threads.

Gunn, replying to @dcfilmnews‘ post about underrated comics, wrote on Threads, “So many. We3, Strange Adventures, Historia, Top Ten, and Promethea are all up there! Go buy them at your favorite comic shop now!”

Gunn also shared images of the five comics that he wrote the names of.

We3, the first comic he mentioned, is a three-issue comic book miniseries by Grant Morrison (writer) and Frank Quitely (artist). Described as a “Western Manga,” it follows three house pets weaponized by the government for lethal combat.

Strange Adventures, his second pick, is a series from DC by writer Tom King. It is a sci-fi series and follows Adam Strange in his adventures beyond the ordinary.

The next one was Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons, writer Kelly Sue DeConnick’s three-issue limited series. It was published to celebrate the titular character’s 80th anniversary.

Gunn also listed Top 10, a superhero series by Alan Moore. It follows the lives and work of the Neopolis’ police force, covering a city where everyone has some kind of superpower.

Finally, the list concluded with a comic book series titled Promethea, which was created by Alan Moore, J. H. Williams III, and Mick Gray. It follows Sophie Bangs in an alternate futuristic New York in 1999. Bangs embodies a powerful entity called Promethea, whose purpose is to bring about the end of the world.
