Project Hail Mary Crosses Huge Milestone, To Beat 2025’s Sci-Fi Alien Movie
Project Hail Mary has reached a major box office milestone and now sits within striking distance of overtaking a major 2025 sci-fi alien blockbuster. The Ryan Gosling-led space adventure continues its theatrical run, edging closer to dethroning one of last year’s biggest superhero releases on the worldwide chart.
Project Hail Mary crosses $600 million, close to beat Superman soon
According to Box Office Mojo, Project Hail Mary has grossed $613.4 million worldwide and will soon surpass Superman’s $618.7 million total within this week. The Amazon MGM Studios release earned $305.4 million domestically and $308 million internationally. Released on March 20, 2026, across 4,007 theaters, the science-fiction adventure now ranks as the third-highest-grossing film of 2026.
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller from a screenplay by Drew Goddard, the film stars Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, a science teacher on an interstellar mission. Additionally, Sandra Hüller, James Ortiz, and Lionel Boyce appear in supporting roles. The film adapts Andy Weir’s 2021 novel and runs for 2 hours and 36 minutes.
The film debuted to $80.6 million domestically and $60.4 million overseas for a worldwide total of $141 million, becoming Amazon MGM Studios’ biggest debut. Its production budget stood at $200 million net, with a gross figure of $248 million. Meanwhile, on Rotten Tomatoes, 94% of 393 critics gave positive reviews, while Metacritic assigned a score of 77 out of 100. Audiences polled by CinemaScore awarded the film an “A” grade.
Superman, distributed domestically by Warner Bros., closed with $618.7 million worldwide from a $225 million budget. The film earned $354.2 million domestically, representing 57.3 percent of its total gross. However, international earnings reached only $264.5 million. Superman opened domestically on July 11, 2025, with $125 million.
Project Hail Mary held the top domestic position from March 20 through March 31. Subsequently, it dropped to second place on April 1 after The Super Mario Galaxy Movie dethroned it.
On April 26, the film added $4 million from 3,510 theaters. Superman’s strongest international markets included the United Kingdom at $37.9 million and Mexico at $23.3 million. With current momentum, Project Hail Mary should overtake Superman’s worldwide total within days.
