How Michael 2 Can Happen Revealed by Lionsgate Boss

Lionsgate is already charting a course for a sequel to the recently released Michael Jackson biopic. The studio’s boss has confirmed that initial production complications paved the way for a multi-film approach to the singer’s life.

Adam Fogelson talks about Michael 2 prospects

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Adam Fogelson has confirmed plans for a sequel to Michael, in an interview with Business Insider during CinemaCon. Fogelson revealed his support for expanding the King of Pop’s story across multiple films. This follows extensive reshoots on the original project.

The biopic is directed by Antoine Fuqua and stars Jaafar Jackson as his late uncle. It originally depicted the 1993 police raid of Neverland Ranch. The raid followed allegations by 13-year-old Jordan Chandler. Filmmakers later discovered a clause in Chandler’s settlement. The clause barred any depiction of his case in a movie. According to Variety, the reshoots cost the Jackson estate around $15 million. The film no longer touches on any child sexual-abuse allegations against Jackson.

“Look, there’s at least one more movie,” Fogelson said of a potential Michael Jackson movie franchise. He admitted he was always skeptical about making Michael one long stand-alone movie. He now sees an opportunity to delve deeper into the legend with a sequel.

“Just speaking less as an employee of Lionsgate and more as a person who has spent a lot of time in the movie business, I was always excited by the possibility that you could make a more complete and satisfying telling of Michael’s story if you weren’t confined to only one movie,” he said.

A potential sequel could spotlight Jackson’s career highlights and his fall from grace. Fogelson supports the idea if producer Graham King, director Antoine Fuqua, and writer John Logan choose to explore it. “From my perspective, it’s important to try to give the audience an authentic understanding of who Michael Jackson was,” he said.

For now, fans can catch Michael playing in nearby theatres.
