Clayface: James Gunn Offers Big Hint on DCU Movie’s Connection to Creature Commandos
James Gunn has seemingly confirmed a major connection between Clayface and Creature Commandos.
DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures’ Clayface will be released in United States theaters later this year. Co-written by Mike Flanagan and directed by James Watkins, the movie will see Tom Rhys Harries play the titular Batman villain.
What is the update on Clayface’s connection to Creature Commandos?
Clayface shows up in Creature Commandos, the animated series that officially kicked off Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU when it premiered in 2024. Many fans have wondered if the Clayface that was featured in Creature Commandos is the same character as the one who will be the focus of Clayface, or if they’ll be two different versions of the character that inhabit the DCU.
As noted on Twitter by Everything DCU, James Gunn has liked a fan’s comment theorizing that the Clayface in Creature Commandos is indeed the same character featured in Watkins’ movie. This isn’t definitive confirmation that they are indeed the same; it does, however, highly suggest that it is the case.
Some fans have also wondered how that might work tonally, as Creature Commandos has a very different vibe compared to what we see in the Clayface trailer. Gunn, however, has confirmed that Clayface takes place before all of the DCU projects that have been released thus far, meaning that a large chunk of time likely takes place between the two projects. Gunn has also been open about how different DCU projects will have different tones from one another, despite all being in the same universe.
The official synopsis for Clayface reads, “DC Studios’ first-ever foray into the genre, Clayface is a riveting horror thriller from director James Watkins, starring Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the Gotham City villain. Clayface unravels one man’s horrifying descent from rising Hollywood star to revenge-filled monster in a story that explores the loss of one’s identity and humanity, corrosive love, and the dark underbelly of scientific ambition.”
Clayface arrives on October 23, 2026.
